Cove Pictures is a television production company launched in March 2016. Whilst the company is new, our team have significant TV, Film and Theatre experience.

Cove was established by Dame Heather Rabbatts, Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody. Patrick and Brian are the founders of SMUGGLER, a highly successful commercials production company.

Considered to be a leader in its field they are the producers behind global brands such as Jaguar, Adidas, Nike, BT, American Express and Microsoft. Smuggler’s success is not only linked to Patrick and Brian’s unique creative and business skills but they have also built their company by working with some of the most talented directors from across the media landscape.

It was this connectivity with talent, which ignited Patrick and Brian’s interest in developing ideas in other media spaces. They were co-producers with Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson on the Tony award winning musical “Once” and are now working on their next theatre show which will be staged in London before transferring to Broadway. The creation of Cove Pictures will facilitate their ambition to develop drama/factual shows for the international TV marketplace.

Dame Heather Rabbatts, who has worked with the BBC, Channel 4, Shed Media and Time Warner established the company with Patrick and Brian. Cove has a co-production partnership with James Bond producers EON and is currently working on a number of drama titles for TV, for both the US, UK and the international market. EON have been increasing their creative output in theatre and independent films and are looking to enter the TV space with their alliance with Cove.

Working with Cove is the Red Arrow TV group who have a distribution relationship with the company which enables Cove to have access to the European broadcasters, finance as well as a presence in the US.

Alongside the drama offer is a factual entertainment team led by Paul Sowerbutts , who created “Man v Wild” with Bear Grylls the most successful show on cable in the last five years, was co-producer of BAFTA award-winning “Touching the Void” and the managing director ofChannel 4’s international rights business for a number of years.  

Between SMUGGLER, EON and the Cove team the company has unique relationships with talent as well as a comprehensive range of networks with broadcasters. Cove has offices in London, New York and LA.

Patrick Milling Smith is a film, theatre, commercial and music video producer who co-founded international production company SMUGGLER alongside Brian Carmody. Since its inception, SMUGGLER has twice taken home the coveted Cannes Lions Palme d’Or as well as the Cannes Lions Grand Prix, AICP Awards, Tony’s, Olivier’s, the Emmy, the Grammy and D&AD Pencils. SMUGGLER has also been recognized as Production Company of the Year several times by the Clio Awards, British Arrows, and Creativity Magazine.

In 2012, Patrick produced the Broadway adaptation of the Oscar-winning musical Once which garnered 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical along with the 2013 Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. In addition to touring the US, Once is currently playing in Toronto, Korea and London’s West End where it was nominated for six Olivier Awards including Best Musical and went on to win two.

In 2014 Patrick founded Here Be Dragons, a Virtual Reality Production Studio, with filmmaker and digital artist Chris Milk.

Born in Skibbereen, Ireland, Brian Carmody came to LA in April of 1994 to work for Propaganda Films. He quickly became the Head of Sales for Propaganda’s sister company, Satellite, where he sourced and managed some of the world’s best and pioneering music video and commercial directors who have since gone on to become major players in the feature world.

In 2001 Carmody joined forces with Patrick Milling Smith and together they founded SMUGGLER. They quickly gained a reputation for spotting young talent and building successful careers.


Head of  Factual Entertainment

Paul has over 25 years experience in the international television broadcast, production and distribution sectors. He was joint MD of ITEL for 12 years, a ground breaking rights and distribution joint venture between HBO and ITV. He was then MD of Channel 4's domestic and international rights businesses playing a key role in Emmy and Bafta award winning productions such as Sex Traffic by Abby Morgan and Touching the Void by Kevin McDonald. He went on to run leading independent production company Diverse Productions as part of the Zodiak Media Group where he piloted and then produced the top Global factual cable series "Bear Grylls - Man vs Wild" which is still the most highly rated  UK factual series in the US market. Other major award winning films include A Brief History of Time by Errol Morris and Lessons of Darkness by Werner Herzog and the pilot for Deadliest Catch.

Dame Heather Rabbatts is a qualified Barrister and has held a number of roles in senior executive positions across government, sport and broadcasting.

Heather’s media career has included being a Governor of the BBC, a Senior Commissioning Executive at Channel 4 and Chairman of Shed Media, one of the foremost production companies in both the UK and US, overseeing their sale to Time Warner. She has developed programmes across all genres from drama and features to documentary and factual entertainment, but her passion is drama.

Her executive media career is combined with notable board positions including the Royal Opera House, Into Film (a film education charity) and she is the first woman Independent Non-Executive on the board of the FA.



Head of Drama

Elinor Day began her career at the BBC where she script edited a number of single TV films and moved on to produce Loved Up, In Your Dreams, Killing Me Softly, The Perfect Blue and Face. Working for Film 4, Darlow Smithson and as an independent producer Elinor 's credits include East is East, Gangster No 1, Late Night Shopping, Charlotte Gray, Jump Tomorrow and The Warrior, Senna director Asif Kapadia’s first feature,Impact Earth, Clapham Junction, The Diary of Anne Frank, U be Dead, Thriller in Manila, Micro Men, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, White Heat and My Mad Fat Diary. Before joining Smuggler Elinor worked at Scott Free as an executive producer developing projects for their TV slate.
